Sight Words List

Sight words are common words that are found in everyday print; they make up over 50% of all written material. There are many sight word lists circulating today. Contact your school or use one of the lists below to assist your child in obtaining a sight word vocabulary.

Kindergarten Sight Words

Our kindergarten curriculum identified 25 sight words that a child should automatically recognize by the end of kindergarten. They also provided additional words for a child who mastered the first list of sight words.

Dolch Sight Words List

Dolch’s list contains 220 sight words, he referred to these words as service or tool words; they are used in all writings, regardless of the subject matter. As a result, he recommended learning to instantly recognize them.

First Grade Sight Words List

By the end of first grade, a child should automatically recognize and correctly spell sight words.

2nd Grade Sight Words List

Sight words are no longer in vogue; the terminology changes from sight words to wall words. These words are typically displayed on a wall, students should spell these words correctly.

Fry’s Sight Words List

More recently, Fry published a list of the most common words in English and ranked them in order of frequency. The first 25 words make up approximately a third of all written material. The first 100 and 300 words make up about 50% and 65% of all printed material, respectively.
