A word family is a group of words that share the same ending or a rime. The following words are included in the -y word family:
One Syllable Words
by | my | cry | dry | fly |
fry | ply | pry | shy | sky |
sly | spy | spry | try | why |

The one syllable word family contains just a vowel ending (long i), e.g. “y ” in “my “. Word families help young readers notice features of words, e.g., patterns and rimes; they are helpful when teaching both reading and spelling.
