A word family is a group of words that share the same ending or a rime. The following words are included in the -ume word family:
fume | flume | plume | spume |
This word family contains a vowel (long oo sound) as well as a final consonant sound, e.g. “ume ” in “fume“ and our list only includes one syllable words. Word families help young readers notice features of words, e.g., patterns and rimes; they are helpful when teaching both reading and spelling.
