-um Word Family
A word family is a group of words that share the same ending or a rime. The following words are included in the -um word family:
bum | gum | hum | mum |
rum | sum | chum | drum |
glum | plum | scum | slum |
strum | swum |
This word family contains a vowel as well as a final consonant sound, e.g. “um” in “gum“ and our list only includes one syllable words. Word families help young readers notice features of words, e.g., patterns and rimes; they are helpful when teaching both reading and spelling.
