Obtaining a sight word vocabulary is a first-grade milestone. Automatic word recognition is a key to both fluency and comprehension. If a child does not need to sound out the word, they can read quicker and smoother. In addition, it shifts the focus from identifying the word to understanding the meaning of the sentence.
