The Letter O

The letter O makes the sound heard in the words odd, hot and pop. This is the sound (short o) you would first introduce to a child. The letter O also makes the long O sound as heard in home, rose and go. The letter o makes a variety of sounds. It is most commonly found using the long o sound, followed closely by the short o sound. The letter o can also make the following sounds:

• OA Digraph (Long O), e.g., oak, coat and throat ,
• OW Digraph (Long O), e.g., own, mower and know,
• OE Digraph (Long O), foe, Joe and toe,
• OU Diphthong (/ou/), e.g., out, hour and count,
• OW Diphthong (/ou/), e.g., down, cow and powder,
• OI Diphthong (/oi/), e.g., oil, coin and void,
• OY Diphthong, (/oi/), e.g., oyster, loyal and joy,
• Schwa, e.g., other, atom and riot,
• Broad O, e.g., long, off and frost,
• OR Vowel, e.g., order, short and more,
• Short OO, e.g., look, wood and cook, and
• Long OO, e.g., ooze, boot and zoo.

When combined with another vowel, the letter O can sound like either a long U, e.g., canoe or a short U, e.g., generous.
