The Letter J

The letter J makes the sound heard in the words jet, jump and enjoy. This consonant sound ranks in the not so common category along with its counterparts: h, k and w. In some words, the letter J sounds like the letter Y, e.g. hallelujah. It can also sound like the letter H, e.g., Navajo, which typically occurs with Spanish words.

We created worksheets to help your child practice forming the upper- and lowercase letter J correctly. Ideally, letters should be formed from top to bottom and left to right with a continuous stroke when possible. The uppercase J is formed as follows: down, hook, lift and cross. The lowercase j is formed as follows: down, hook, lift and dot.
