The Letter G

The letter G makes the sound heard in the words go, again and frog. This consonant sound ranks in the less common category along with its counterparts: f and v. The letter G also makes the /j/ sound when it typically precedes the letters, e, i or y, e.g., gem, giant, and gym. In fact, the letter g (soft g) makes the /j/ sound more than the letter j.

The letter g when paired with the letter N makes the sound heard in the words sing and ring. When the letter g precedes the letter N it is often silent, e.g., sign and gnaw. It can also make the /f/ sound when combined with the letter H, e.g., cough, rough and tough and in some words, the letters G and H are silent, e.g., though & bright. In others, the letter H is silent, e.g., ghost and ghastly. On a few occasions, letter g makes the sound heard in the words collage and beige.

Ideally, letters should be formed from top to bottom and left to right with a continuous stroke when possible. The uppercase G is formed as follows: around, up and go left. The lowercase g is formed as follows: around, up, down and hook.
