The Letter Z
The letter Z makes the sound heard in the words zero and lazy. This consonant sound ranks in the rare category along with its counterparts: qu, x and y. The letter Z can also sound like the letter S, e.g., Hazel and pretzel. In addition, the letter Z can sound like the letter t. This typically occurs when there are two Z’s, e.g., pizza. On a few rare occasions, the letter Z sounds like /zh/, e.g., seizure.
