Cinco de Mayo

Cinco de Mayo History

Cinco de Mayo (pronounced SEENG koh duh Mah yoh) is typically celebrated with music, dancing and parties on the 5th of May by both Americans and Mexicans. In Spanish, Cinco de Mayo translates to the fifth of May.

On May 5, 1862 the Mexican army defeated the French at the Battle of Puebla. This was a victorious day for the Mexican army because the French was better equipped and triple their size. Puebla, the state capital, is located in east-central Mexico. It is one of Mexico’s largest cities.
