A word family is a group of words that share the same ending or a rime. The following words are included in the -ump word family:
bump | dump | hump | jump |
lump | pump | rump | chump |
clump | frump | grump | plump |
slump | stump | thump | trump |
This word family contains a vowel (short u) as well as a final consonant sound, e.g. “ump” in “jump“ and our list only includes one syllable words. Word families help young readers notice features of words, e.g., patterns and rimes; they are helpful when teaching both reading and spelling.
