Writing Rubric 4th Grade

A writing rubric assesses the quality of a child’s writing. In fourth grade a child is expected to write a BCR, brief constructed response, that provides details from the text. The fourth grade teacher should review the criteria prior to a child completing his writing assignment. The criteria may need to be explained a few times until the student gets accustomed to providing appropriate detail.

Fourth Grade Rubric

The tables below provide a list of the points earned when grading a fourth grader’s writing assignment. These guidelines should be clearly communicated with each student.

1-3-1 Brief Constructed Response Rubric

1	Concludes with a sentence that restates the topic sentence.

1-6-1 Brief Constructed Response Rubric
Score	Criteria
1	Contains a topic sentence.
1	1. Contains detail from the text.
1	2. Includes a minor detail.
1	3. Contains detail from the text.
1	4. Includes a minor detail.
1	5. Contains detail from the text.
1	6. Includes a minor detail.
1	Concludes with a sentence that restates the topic sentence.

The topic sentence should turn the question around (TTQA) and “hook” a reader. When providing details, a writer should use smart cookie phrases.

Poetry Rubric
Score	Criteria
3	Wrote a creative and original poem; the author put thought into both words and ideas.
3	Poem contains vivid detailed definitions of the subject matter.
3	Detailed notes support the poet’s inspiration, e.g., techniques applied.
1	Used both correct spelling and punctuation.

Writing rubric is a great tool that assists both the teacher and student; it gives the teacher grading criteria while presenting a student with feedback on the strengths and weaknesses of her writing.
