Word of the Week for Kids
Vocabulary is the knowledge of words and word meanings, in both spoken and written language; it is the key that unlocks the meaning of text. Knowing the meaning of words helps children understand what they read and can provide clues for unknown words.
The most basic words (e.g. car, dog) do not need to be formally taught unless a child has learning disabilities. However, teaching words that appear often and help a reader understand the text assists in developing a child’s vocabulary. The words of the week were selected using Edward B. Fry’s List of 1,000 instant words.
