Sight Words Flash Cards

This sight word flash card set received 4.5 stars and costs less than $3. It contains 48 cards with one sight word on each side; as a result, it incorporates 96 sight words. In addition, 10 cards contain 2 words or a sight word phrase, e.g., he is. These flash cards are sturdy and similar in size (3.25 x 5.25) to an index card. They selected a font that is ideal for an emergent reader.

Using both Dolch and Fry’s sight word lists, we analyzed the words included in this flash card set. The packaging states there are 54 flash cards of which one contains a note to parents and fun activities so our analysis incorporated 53 cards and revealed the following:

• Includes 90 Dolch sight words, representing 41% of his list,
• Includes 1 Dolch noun (time),
• Includes 4 Fry instant words (each, more, other & than), which are among the top 100 words (Note A),
• 10 flash cards contain sight word phrases – all these words are included on Dolch’s list, and
• 1 sight word included 2x (these).

Note A: Many of the 90 Dolch words are also on Fry’s instant word list.

Sight words flash cards assist a child when developing a sight word vocabulary. Overall, this is a good product; it is very affordable and durable. This product also provides a note to parents containing some insight on sight words and parental teaching tips, e.g., begin by using a small amount of flash cards, as well as activities, e.g., nonsense sentences, to keep it fun.

This sight word checklist is a great tool that tracks a child’s progression. Consider assessing quarterly “tests” to ascertain which sight words a child can recognize upon sight. Sight Words Flash Cards

Sight word flash cards are a great tool that offer repeated exposure to high frequency words. Flashcards are extremely affordable and very easy to make – all you need is a pen and some paper (preferably index cards). Using different fonts, we added some additional activities to the typical sight word flash card instruction. We created three different types of flash cards using the following fonts:

• Regular font,
• Dotted lines, and
• Bubble font.

If your child needs practice writing each sight word, consider using the dotted line flash cards. If your child is creative and enjoys coloring, consider using the flash cards with bubble fonts. Color each sight word and add a stick figure to represent the word (some words will be more difficult than others to illustrate, e.g., if). You could also look for pictures or words in a magazine and glue them to the flash card. The regular font sight word flash cards will give you a traditional looking flash card. Consider laminating each flash card as you will most likely use these cards numerous times.

Each PDF file noted below contains 1 page or eight or less sight words per file. Ideally begin with 5 to 10 words and gradually introduce new ones. Remember to review previously learned words daily.

Note A: The word, shall, is not as prevalent today as it was when Dolch originally created his sight word list.

Once your child masters all of these words, review previously learned ones using Dolch sight words flash cards.

This sight word flash card set received over 4 stars, costs less than $6.50 and contains over 100 words, 108 to be exact. These flash cards are sturdy and similar in size (3 x 5.25) to an index. They judiciously selected an ideal font that is both crisp and clear; it is perfect for a child who is just learning to read.

Flash Cards

Referencing both Dolch and Fry sight word list and instant word list, respectively, these flash cards incorporate numerous high frequency words. After further analysis, this product contains the following mix of words:

• Includes 91 Dolch sight words, representing 41% of Dolch’s sight word list,
• Includes 14 Dolch nouns, representing 14% of his nouns list (Note A),
• Includes 2 Fry instant words (each & other), which are among the top 100 words (Note B), and
• Includes 1 word (ironically the word is “word”) that is not included on either Dolch or Fry’s high frequency word lists (Note C).

Note A: The following nouns were included in the flash card set: bed, box, car, cat, dog, egg, fish, leg, pig, ring, sun, time, top & toy.

Note B: Many of the 91 Dolch words are also on Fry’s instant word list.

Note C: This word is included on our school’s first grade wall word list.

Overall, this is a good product containing durable index size flash cards. The font is bold, clear and an ideal size. Unfortunately, it does contain one flaw; it includes nouns that are not phonetically irregular. These words should not be taught using traditional sight word instruction but rather phonetic decoding, e.g. /d/, /o/ and /g/ when put together says dog. When you come upon these words, make sure you teach your child how to decode these words properly.

Sight words flash cards help a child develop a sight word vocabulary. This product also offers some teaching tips, e.g., begin by using a small amount of flash cards, as well as activities, e.g., writing sentences, to help a child automatically recognize these words.

Sight Word Flash Card Checklist

Use this checklist to track a child’s progress. Our kindergarten teacher performed quarterly assessments to determine which words a child could automatically recognize. Using colored highlighters, they tracked this information on a similar form and included it in each child’s data notebook. Assist your child in automatically recognizing high frequency words. Flash cards provide the perfect exercise to introduce sight words or review previously learned ones. If learning new words, select several sight words. Review each sight word with your child and then mix up the cards and then “flash” each card. If your child struggles with a word, provide assistance.

The PDf files below contain 8 words or 1 page per file. Every child progresses differently; slowly introduce new words and always remember to review previously taught words.

Note A: This group of sight word flash cards contains only six words. The other two cards are blank. Use these flash cards to practice two sight words that your child may be struggling with – write each word on the blank flash cards.
